WaPoDe — Water pollutants detection by ZnO-modified electrochemical sensors: From computational modeling via electrochemical testing to real system application (2023–2026)

WaPoDe is a multidisciplinary scientific research project focused on developing electrochemical sensors for detecting pharmaceutical and pesticide residues in water. The research involves developing and testing zinc oxide-based nanomaterials by combining computational modeling, materials characterization, and electrochemical measurements. The aim is to improve sensor sensitivity, selectivity, and response speed to enable more reliable monitoring of pollutants in aquatic environments. The project brings together expertise in materials science, electrochemistry, and environmental protection. Expected outcomes include prototype electrodes with enhanced properties and a foundation for developing affordable sensing solutions for water resource protection.

Participating institutions include the Institute of Technical Sciences of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA), the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences at the University of Belgrade, the Faculty of Physical Chemistry at the University of Belgrade, and the School of Engineering Management at Union – Nikola Tesla University.

Principal Investigator: Dr Smilja Marković, Research Professor, Institute of Technical Sciences of SASA; School of Engineering Management.

EIKO — Electrochemical Rainfall Runoff Index (2026–2032)

This scientific research and applied project of the School of Engineering Management focuses on developing an electrochemical rainfall runoff index as a tool for assessing environmental and technical risks in Čukarica. The research involves sampling runoff from urban, transport, and industrial surfaces, physicochemical and electrochemical measurements, and multicriteria data analysis. The aim is to develop a composite indicator for comparing sites, tracking changes, and identifying priorities for further investigation and preventive measures. The project is planned as a six-year study, with a pilot phase during the first year. Its results are intended to support decision-making by the City Municipality of Čukarica, infrastructure maintenance planning, and protection of the Sava River basin.

Principal Investigator: Dr Luka Latinović, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering Management.

Safe Čukarica — Assessment and Prevention of Local Safety Risks (2026–2027)

"Safe Čukarica" is a scientific research and applied project of the School of Engineering Management, with the City Municipality of Čukarica as its partner institution. The project examines residents' perceptions of safety, local risks, the condition of public spaces, trust in institutions, and the quality of communication with local government. Survey research, statistical analysis, and qualitative data analysis provide the foundation for an integrated model for assessing and preventing community safety risks. Expected outcomes include a study on local safety, recommendations for relevant institutions, and a concept for a digital module for reporting and mapping problems. The aim is to support preventive action, citizen participation, and evidence-based decision-making.

Principal Investigator: Dr Milena Cvjetković, Associate Professor, School of Engineering Management.
